NOVA SCOTIA-HALIFAX

HALIFAX-Oh the excitement! Thousands of people waiting for hours to see Queen Elizabeth. She is in town for

the International fleet review in Halifax Harbour to honor the Canadian Naval Centennial. The HMCS St. John’s

was just docking when we arrived. As you can see or really not see. I didn’t have the camera ready I didn’t

know The Queen was going to come out the door on that spot of  the ship were we could see her. Well

you all will just have to believe us when we tell you WE SAW THE QUEEN. If you get your magnifier out

you might see the top of her white hat.

HALIFAX CITADEL-a National Historic Site. Building started in 1749, Citadel Hill has served as the site of four different forts.

Each was built during a time of perceived threat. It took over 28 years to complete. In 1952 it was declared a national

historic site ending its proud military career. Today we have reenactments by mostly college students giving us

a taste of the past. The first picture is our tour guide. The red coats marching. Third is preparing the cannon for

it’s noon firing(today it signal lunch for downtown employees). Originally it was to let the ships know what

time it was in Halifax. The last photo is the artillery squad. Would like to mention to any RV’ers, we bought the

National & Historic Park Pass for Canada. The Citadel is downtown and walking distance to the waterfront. We

parked there all day. And returned the next day as the Metro Center is across the street where we saw the Tattoo.

HALIFAX-Alexander Keith’s Brewery- The tour is a little pricey $15.00 each. But we were so entertained we felt

it was worth it. The tour is an hour long, with actors in period costume singing, dancing, telling stories along

with the history of Alexander Keith. Of course let’s not forget the 2 large mugs of beer you get. Don’t twaddle

with your drinking as you don’t get do long for the second mug! We wouldn’t want to leave any. Great fun!

HALIFAX- Canada Day! Today we again parked at the Citadel.  The Tattoo Parade was at the base of the fort, took

our chairs down to enjoy the festivities. We met a SKP couple in the parking area, Sherrie & Jack so we enjoyed

their company at the parade

HALIFAX- The Royal Nova Scotia International Tatttoo  is presented annually

at the Halifax Metro Centre. Featuring over 2,000 world-class Canadian and international military and civilian performers.

Featuring pipes and drums, military  and civilian bands, historic reenactments, dancers, acrobats, choirs, military displays and

competitions, drama and comedy in a number of innovative acts in a fast pace three and half hours show. It really is an

excellent performance!  

HALIFAX WATERFRONT- We were going to drive on some after the Tattoo but it lasted longer than

we had expected. Our new friends Jack and Sherrie had told us where they were parking

(at Pier 21-free)so we joined them there and walked down the waterfront to watch

the Flamingo Dancers. This is July 1 Canada Day so the waterfront was crowed with people.

There were fireworks at 10:00, but we didn’t quite last that long. It was a big day!

NOVA SCOTIA-SOUTH SHORE

The weather turned cold & rainy so we changed our plans and are now heading down Hwy 12 to South Shore.

Looking on the map we decided to drive down Hwy 329 around a small peninsula.

BLANDFORD- Even in the mist the small coves were so pretty. We stopped at this lookout to

read the historical signs. It was a nice little spot, getting late and would ya know, it didn’t

say No parking. So yet another beautiful boondocking spot.

BAYSWATER-A Memorial for all the passengers who lost their lives in the crash of the Swissair

Flight 111, that terrorist blew up over St. Margarets Bay.

WALESBACK-Is on the other side of the bay. This is the second Memorial site for the Swissair Flight 111.

They were built to form a triangle. If you look out to sea straight along the sides of each Memorial it would

form the point of the triangle. This would be the spot the plane went down.

PEGGY’S COVE-Traveling east along the South Shore drive towards Halifax is this must see town.

We were used to seeing  lots of vegetation so when we arrived here it was quite a surprise.

In my opinion it is just breathtaking.  Loved the ruggedness of the rocks. It’s a very small

village. As you enter there is a good sized visitor center with a  large parking lot. Here they give out walking maps through the village to

the lighthouse.

NOVA SCOTIA-FUNDY SHORE & ANNAPOLIS VALLEY

KENNETCOOK- A festival-reenactments, antique tractors and live music from 3:00-1:00am. This Captain was a lively

fellow with lots to tell us. Here they call themselves Loyalists because they were loyal to the British Crown during the

Revolutionary War.

NOEL-To all you SKP’s out there this is Gloria (and her rescued dog Bear) she invites us Escapee’s to stay on

her property. She was very gracious and helpful with information on NS. Thanks Gloria!

WALTON-Lighthouse

WINDSOR-This blockhouse is at the Ford Edwards National Monument site. It is the oldest such structure of this type in all of Canada.

GRAND PRE-Jim enjoying his lunch of lobster/mussels/corn on the cob/local strawberries and Canadian beer.

Grand Pre-The National Historic Site- This is another Acadian deportation site. The story was wonderfully told with

a 3 screen movie.The statue is of Evangeline,from Longfellow’s poem depicting her sorrowful wait for her loved one. The church (not original)

is where the towns men were rounded up under a false pretext then held  captive for ten days before being deported.

The stained glass which the photo doesn’t do justice.Is a picture of Acadians being taken on a boat with their loved ones crying on shore.

HALL’S HARBOUR-While  driving along HWY 1  reading our brochure’s the name Hall’s Harbour Lobster Pound

piqued our interest. A few miles off the Hwy but so what, that’s why we’re  here, to explore. What a great

find! A small harbor with the boats high and dry with the famous Fundy Bay tide out. Always so interesting to

see. The spot was so beautiful we just stayed. A boondocking site with a million dollar view!

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND 3

   CAP EGMONT-On Hwy 11 on the North Cape coastal Drive you’ll find The Bottle Houses . Three fantasy-like buildings made of over 30,000 recycled glass bottles set among serene and colorful flower gardens. This retired gentleman obviously had lots of free time.

SUMMERSIDE-A small afternoon carnival  

SUMMERSIDE-At the waterfront. Note the large parking lot we are in. It was huge!  We bring this to your attention

because as were are sitting there admiring the scenery then KA-BOOM goes the camper! What the ???????.

We ran around to see that a car had hit us. Unbelievable, the whole parking lot was virtually empty!

Two teenage girls hop out -the driver in tears, crying “my dad’s going to kill me” She was backing up to park.

No one will ever figure that one out. How could she not see us? And why would she park right behind the camper?

She hit the hydraulic lift on the camper pushing it over and bending the foot. We checked it out first thing,

it worked. The camper got pushed to one side. So we had to take it off and recenter it. This of course takes a while.

Fate? We were staying over an extra night in Summerside because we wanted to catch a singer’s performance at 8:00pm.

We paid extra for an oil change that morning because I didn’t want to take the camper off and had to use a truck shop.

What a lousy end to a beautiful day. Oh did I mention we missed the performance.

Good thing –nobody was hurt. Minor damage to camper. And yes they had insurance. Bad news-teenager probably still crying

Dad said she won’t be driving his car again.
