CENTRAL NL & CHANGE ISLAND

   

Point Leamington- Like so many towns we come into, NF has invested a lot in

boardwalks for their trails. We climbed this one(204)steps to see the waterfall

.

LEADING TICKLES-We had to drive to the end of the peninsula to see a town called Leading Tickles. Just a beautiful town

wrapped around the cove. It did get the Tidy Towns award! A tickle is a small ebb of water between two bodies of

land. They call them leading tickles so hence the name of the town.

GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR- A fairly big town. We came to stock up on supplies. There were festivities going on in town,

one was a huge rock concert, OMG teenagers everywhere! We went to the local church’s Brunch were we ran into

Joyce and Larry Space, so we enjoyed swapping stories for the next two hours while we were entertained by some

local music.

MASONS COVE-After brunch we had to do some errands and repair work. But by 3:00 we were on our way

(as you could hear the concert from anywhere in town) to quieter places. Last night we were so close to the

campsite the boom boom was making me bounce so we picked up and moved to Walmart a few miles away.

The next night we wanted the peace and quiet of the small towns so started NE stopping  at Masons Cove, pictured above.

More silly stuff along the way. We stopped for fish & chips.

Learned about the extinct  aboriginal people, the Beothuk at the

Interpretation Center. Note:Provincial Historic Sites are free on Sundays.

We again ran into the Space’s here. We were both going in the same

direction for the next few days; Change Islands & Fogo Island so

we headed off together.  The ferry was a half hour late so we got to Change Island

at around 6:30. It’s a 25 minute ferry ride.

CHANGE ISLANDS-I am sitting in the camper waiting for Jim, Larry & Joyce to return from a hike at

the end of the island, the trail is called Squid Jigger Trail about an 1 1/2 hr hike.

Peter Porter at his private museum entertaining us at the end of his tour. This is one of those amazing

places you find along the way. It’s not written in any brochure another Newfie told Jim about it. He

took us around the museum and explained each item, it’s use and origin. A very fun guy

BAIE VERTE PENINSULA NL

 

 

BAIE VERTE-We are slowly heading East. But wanted to explore this peninsula alittle

First stop was the town of Baie Verte. Here we visited the Miner’s Museum, they have

a tunnel leading to displays on mining and the home life of miners. (forgot to take pictures).

Also in the town is a small waterfall with trail along side. Too steep for me but Jim

enjoyed it.

 

Heading north was a lookout for the Asbestos Mine.  

FLEUR DE LYS- Is at the north end of the peninsula. Small town, pretty cove. Note the first picture, it a little island

picnic spot. There was a nice trail leading to the top of the hill overlooking the cove. In town is the Dorset Soapstone

Quarry National Historic Site. It’s the only known soapstone outcrop in the Northern Hemisphere that preserves evidence of

Paleo-Eskimo vessel carvings dating back 1,600 years.(opps who had the camera?) What again no pictures. We are

falling down on the job. 

WILD COVE-Drove over to another small cove, population 80. Saw a Newfie in his front

yard so asked him if it was ok to overnight at the wharf. He was working in his yard, his

hobby he said, took us on a tour. This town should get the Tidy Town award. Some

towns we have been to have a sign posted as you enter that they have won the

Tidy Town Award. If we could vote we would pick this one.

End of the day. The weather was very warm so out came the chairs and beer.

Oh gee does this look like a pattern? Great spot! As we were taking in the

view several Newfie’s came by to chat with us. Such nice enjoyable people we

love talking with the locals.

La Scie- Well not every day is perfect. We drove 53 km to La Scie  but by

the time we got there the weather had turned very nasty. So unfortunately

we headed back the 53km before we could head south. We decided to go

to a larger town on the way east to restock.

We were rewarded with the chance to see this bear. He just

ambled across the Hwy sat down along side and posed for us.

Our first bear we have ever seen at close range.

NEW FOUNDLAND 4

  

GROS MORNE-We are traveling back down Hwy 430 to get to the Hwy that connects East. We are seeing

the area of the National Park we didn’t see on the way North. Hope that makes some sense. There

will be a lot of roads we will have to double back on. The pictures above are in Rocky Harbour.

DEER LAKE-It was an absolutely beautiful day, 84 degrees. We were looking for a place to relax and enjoy.

We sit up our chairs and kicked back with a cold beer. No prohibitive signage so just stayed in the parking

lot overnight. Fantastic!

LABRADOR

 

WELCOME TO LABRADOR- Boy it was hard to find the sign!! We couldn’t hardly see a thing

when we got off the ferry. It was cold and foggy.  We drove to Red Bay where the paved

road ends. About 67km. Good thing they just painted the white lines.

RED BAY-Went to the Historical Site of Basque Whaling.Whalers from the Basque region of Spain and France

were hunting whales and processing oil for the lucrative European market at numerous ports in southern

Labrador by the 1540’s. Red Bay was one the the largest.

 

BONEY SHORE BEACH-on the other side of the cove is a short hike to whale bones.

Here I have to mention when we got out of the truck we were attacked to biting

flies. OMG!!! It was awful, we grabbed the can of bug spray and couldn’t get it

on fast enough!. I got bitten all around the eyes, ears and scalp. I can’t even post

the picture I took of myself it was sooooo ugly. My eyes were swollen for two days.

I spent two more days looking for a net mosquito jacket and head net!

TRACEY HILL TRAIL-on the same trail this one splits off to go the top of the hill

over looking the bay. Jim had to go alone. No way was I climbing 689 steps! Way to

go Jim!!!!

  

RED BAY-The morning was clear but by noon

the fog started rolling in again.

Luckily the weather was clear most of the way back to the ferry so we got to see most

of what we missed yesterday. Toward the ferry terminal as you can see it was foggy

again. Oh well we still loved it!
