The Shenandoah National Park: Skyline Drive is 105 miles along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Spectacular views. I can only imagine the beauty when the leaves turn.
Stopped just outside of the park, to enjoy The Luray Caverns. Our good friend Ron has been telling us about this cavern for years. He was right! Great caverns. Only wish pictures could capture it. On the grounds was also a museum and a car museum. Liked them all.
Monticello-Thomas Jefferson(1743-1826), theorist of the American Revolution, drafted the Declaration of Independence. The ideals of the Declaration-That “all men are created equal” and have a right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”—established the foundations of self-government and individual freedom in America. Jefferson’s words of 1776 still inspire people around the world today.
Enjoyed a guided tour of the house and gardens. Jefferson designed every aspect of Monticello, constructing and modifying its buildings and landscape over 40 years.
Visited Appomattox where General Lee surrendered to Grant ending the Civil War April 1865
Jim standing in KY,TN,VA after hiking up the tri-point mt.
The Cumberland Gap-the trail taken first by Bison, Indians then pioneer settlers taking them through a gap in the mountains to the fertile land of Kentucky
Virginia Creeper Trail-total length 33.4 miles. A trail connecting Abingdon, Va. and Whitetop Station, Va. Damascus in the middle offers several biking shuttle services. So up to the top of Whitetop we went having a fantastic 17 mile ride downhill. Shady and running along a river this couldn’t have been more pleasant.
The nickname “Virginia Creeper” came from the early steam locomotives as they slowly struggled up the mountains.
