THE FISH, FUN AND FOLK FESTIVAL-Our first night meeting up with SKP friends,Sherrie, Jack,  Donna,

Steve, Joyce, Joan, Larry, & Ken. Not pictured are Tom and Deb. Afterwards we headed off to the

Split Pea’s performance.

 

A Boomer couple Chet and Gay bought a house here a few summers ago. It’s

this wonderful gingerbread Victorian. On a rainy day  we were invited to have happy hour there. You

wouldn’t believe all the wonderful antiques and collectables!

The Split Peas- A six woman show specializing in Folk & traditional Newfoundland Music.

It was two hours of hand clapping foot stomping fun. The group has been together seventeen

years. They perform two nights a week during the summer. The show goes on our list of must do’s if your in Twillingate.

The scavenger hunt! Part of the festival fun. Joyce, Larry, Joan and I went all over town collecting and doing

silly things. The first is the team doing jumping jacks in front of Riff’s store. The second was a team member (look

closely for Larry) on his knees barking like a dog in front of an orange house. The last one a team member(me)wrapped

in a roll of toilet paper on the Twillingate bridge.

 

 

The next morning we walked over to the Iceberg shop to buy tickets for the show Smallwood.

Pictured above on the right, Joyce Space, Steve and Donna  at the theater. It’s a story of a

politician’s rise to power. He was the first Premier of Newfoundland  holding

that position for 23 years. It was a very good performance by such a young cast.

Of course the Parade. And the weather cooperated!! 

Our Traditional Jigg’s Dinner. Boiled salted beef, rutabaga, cabbage, potato, mashed yellow

peas, bread stuffing and a large dumpling, with a side of pumpkin relish. Had to try this

but don’t need another, as you can imagine it was pretty bland. But we love to try

traditional local foods. We  also discovered we don’t need pickled mussels ever again??

It’s great to have talented friends. All of us had purchased tickets for a show at the

arena only to discover at the door the group cancelled  at the last minute. Ken, one of

our Boomer friends volunteered to perform. ( He’s on the right). Ken sings and plays guitar very

well I might add. Did a fantastic job! After a while two other volunteers got up. We had a great

show after all!

 

Later in the week we went to a Dinner Theater, sort of like a Hee Haw show, unfortunately our least

favorite performance, mostly due to the non existing sound system on stage during the skits. We

just couldn’t hear what they were saying. The music part was fine when they stood in front of the

mikes.

 

Saturday night we ate at the Church dinner put on by the local women. It was very good, more food

than you could eat, well we did manage more than we should. Fish(when they say fish it’s always cod)

salmon, brewis(hard bread & salt cod), fish cakes,and an assortment of salads and pies. Which I had

to sample four of.

 

Our very favorite performance of the week was Ada (of the Split Pea’s) she has a show

every Saturday night along with a guest performer. She’s a gifted singer songwriter. Plays

some jazz, blues &  little country.

Terry Penny a fantastically gifted singer songwriter was her guest this week. He got a standing

ovation. He wrote and sang a few ballads that were so moving he had Jim in tears.
