NEWFOUNDLAND-THE LOOP

NEWTOWN-The area between Gander and Gambo is called the loop. We started at the top of Hwy 330 going East

it wasn’t scenic and a lot of the road was bad we were wondering if the whole loop was going to be a disappointment

until we turned into Newtown-called the Venice of Newfoundland. All built on the rocks connected by little

bridges with waterways at every turn (like canals). Very worth the drive.

We took this picture in the gift store. These dolls are dressed as Mummers.

At Christmas time in NL people will dress up put on a mask or sheet visiting

neighbors who will serve them rum and a dessert guessing at who they are.

GREENSPOND-Driving along reading the brochures we took the gamble on its being all as described. We

drove the 15km  off the main road. We were not disappointed what a charming town. You enter from

a bluff where there is a lookout. Oh yes perfect for a nights stop!  There’s a nice trail here we want to

do but it was clouding up and we were hungry. So we did a quick drive through then had our lobster

we purchased this morning. If it’s nice in the morning we’ll take the hike. 

Well nice it was not! Hint----if it’s windy at the end of the day when you stop don’t park on an ocean

bluff. Oh my stars thought we were going to blow off. I felt like I was in a washing machine. At

5:00 almost daybreak Jim turned us into the wind. Better but still not much sleep.

Dover-Stopped at the Interpretation center about the geological fault. Not to impressive and

the teenager who was working was too busy talking with her friends to even turn the lights

on. We did walk out the short hike out back and read the interpretive boards.

GAMBO-This is Joey Smallwood the first Premier of NL, he was born here. After seeing the play

about his life in Twillingate we were interested to learn more about him so visited the

interpretation center and found it very interesting.
